LaCie 5big NAS device

I've been on the lookout for a decent NAS product with at least 4 hard drive slots. The 5big device might actually fit the bill. The only downside is that it doesn't come in a diskless version. That means you have to overpay for the drives, of course.

Some nice features include:

  • Active Directory integration
  • 2 x 1GB Ethernet ports
  • CIFS, FTP, HTTP and Bonjour
  • RAID 6
  • Integrated Bittorrent client
  • Integrated self-monitoring
  • 1 x 2.0 USB for external drives
  • 3 x eSATA for external drives

Boston Dynamics Big Dog

This is a really impressive video, showing how far along actuated, balanced robotics is coming along. The ability to maintain balance has been one of the biggest hurdles in the robotics industry (ASIMO's difficulty with stairs) but obviously they've jumped over that hurdle with the Big Dog!

3D holographic display

This concept for 3D displays has been out there for a while, but I've never seen it executed this well.

The "Surface"

Despite being a MicroSoft device, I'm really quite enamoured of the "Surface" table/computer. Granted, it was only a matter of time before someone came out with a device such as this, and many people have noticed similarities in concept from the screen in Spielberg's "Minority Report".

One thing that bothers me about the device is that it has the potential for being a little too gimicky. In the YouTube video below, an example of what I mean is the "bubbles" coming off the glass when set on the table. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but that would be really distracting. What I'd rather see is the ability of the table to scan the drink to determine if it needs refilling. And what would be even better is if it could perform a spectrograph analysis on the drink and cross reference that with a small chemical database, and then tell the bartender that it not only needs a refill, but also what the drink was.
